51 Years Old, 20 Resumes, and No Job Offers

51 Years old with 20 resumes and not even close to getting a job.

I’m not kidding, I just spoke with a woman who has 20 different resumes and not having any luck in the job market.

Having 20 different resumes sounds a bit much. I generally have only two or three solid resumes that target similar jobs in the same industry. Three is much easier to maintain than 20. Having 20 resumes means you are looking at 20 different kinds of jobs. That’s like having 20 different targets when all you need is one. Having 20 resumes tells me that you’re willing to take any job that comes along and that strategy does not work well in todays job market. It’s impossible to focus on 20 different targets at the same time.

Consider writing one or two resumes that are laser targeted to one type of job and then go for it. Setting your sights on one type of job will increase your leverage and make you a much more powerful candidate.

When you are looking for jobs, you need to be able to say no to the ones that don’t fit your background — not write another resume that makes you fit. That strategy is going to make you chase jobs for the rest of your life and you’ll get nothing in the end.

This reminds me of an old adage, “the man who chases two rabbits catches none.”

Just look for one rabbit and you’ll be in a much better position to find the job you want.
