How do I explain I was fired?

by admin on 3:02 pm

After 15 successful years working in the nursing field, I made a very unintelligent decision on the job and got myself fired. (No one was hurt, it was to do with charting). How do I handle this in an interview situation for another nursing job? I learned a lot, personally, from the situation, but I’d rather not talk about it at all in an interview. Any suggestions?

If it were me, I would normally not bring it up or tell them I left on
my own terms or was laid off. I never advocate lying in an interview,
but outright telling a potential employer you were fired from your last
job sets of lots of warning signs and greatly diminishes your chances of
getting the job. Though it has flip-side, if you get caught lying, then
you’ll get probably get fired again.

You can always be truthful and explain what happened, but if you leave
them with one ounce of doubt in their minds, you won’t get the job.

In the past, I have been successful in telling employers I was fired
from my last job, but I was able to convince them to see beyond that and
they didn’t care.

I hope this helps.
