Job interviewing for teens - Interview Advice for Teens

April 3rd, 2008 | by admin |

Hi Don,I bought the job interview tools for my son who is 18 and has never had a job except for working with his uncle when needed as a laborer.  He read it, but said he felt it only pertained to individuals who were looking for the “big job” and he is looking for a job for now with Kmart, Best Buy, Home Depot.  I tried to explain to him that it is relative to any interview, but he is stubborn.  I made a resume with school history, his small accomplishment with little league, soccer, basketball.  He worked for a while with his uncle.  He said he wouldn’t take it because resumes are for people who have had some good work history.

Hello,

It sounds like your son is just a little down on himself.  18 is a tough and confusing age - you’re out of high school and all of the sudden the world is coming at you FAST - and everyone wants’ to know what you are going to do with your life.  You almost don’t even need a resume for entry level jobs at Home Depot, Best Buy, etc.  Just an application will do.  On a side note, a recent customer used my guide to land himself a job at Best Buy and he said it helped him out immensely.  Obviously, entry level jobs won’t be able to take advantage of all the questions in the guide, but it will definitely help you prepare for almost any job, big or small.

Does he have any plans to attend college?

For entry level jobs like this, which I like to call transitional jobs, because you don’t work them for more than 1-3 years, will probably focus on his personal interest in their products. Say your son is a computer whiz, Best Buy will be more attracted to him because they have a computer department and always need help in that area.

I would suggest to your son that he create his own resume, that way it will be HIS and he’ll be more proud of it.  Though sit down with him and REMIND him of all the things he is good at because he is his worst critic.

I hope this helps.  Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you and your son.

Best regards,

Don
