Terminated Without a Reason

I was let go from my last company and I don’t really know why.

They said I acted “unprofessionally” at a company meeting. The only thing I did during the meeting was ask questions about things that were not going right with a reporting system we were using. I held up my hand to ask the questions and did not argue or even raise my voice at all. I asked human resources to give me a specific reason I was let go and they said they would get back to me. I have never heard from them. I am sure there is something they are not telling me, but why?

If they are not telling you why, then it sounds like a simple case of someone just not liking you. I see it all the time. It even happened to me a long time ago. I really wanted to put closure to it by getting the real reason, but I woke up one day and realized what really happened. They didn’t like me because I just didn’t have my heart in working for them which means I was not an asset to the company.

I can’t say if the same is true for you, only you can figure that out. But for me, and in hind site, it was the best thing for me.

When you interview, avoid defending yourself because interviewers will see right through you. I made this mistake over and over by justifying myself to prospective interviewers and though it made me feel better because I could tell my side of the story — it didn’t score me any jobs because companies don’t want to hire whiners.

Instead just tell them you were let go because someone had it in for you and though you had in impeccable performance record, there was one person you did not get along with on a personal level. Or something like that, as long as you are truthful.
