I will be interviewed by someone in a higher position than the first interviewer. Now I’m really nervous. The position is half the compensation of what I had been making with my last job.
How do I get the most out of a job offer? - Bill B.
How to squeeze more compensation of a job that’s paying half what you used to make.
I’ve been in that position before and what I try to do is demonstrate the additional value they are getting with someone like me that they won’t find anyone else. And you tell them that coming up to speed on this job will only take you a few days because you’ve had these same responsibilities in your last job. Let them know you’ll be immediately productive where other candidates may take a month or two before reaching this level. the key is to separate yourself from the competition and differentiate yourself from the crowd.
Doing this will help you get closer to the money you want and deserve. If you still can get all the financial compensation you want, then hit them up for additional vacation time and possible some other fringe benefits they may offer. Be clever, be original, but most of all, don’t start going down this road until they have made you an offer. Basically, don’t try to negotiate unless you have an offer in hand, or you probably won’t get one.
