As a manager you are responsible for many different things, and you may be concerned about knowing how to be a good manager and a good leader. Although only time can get you the most comfortable in your new position, there are many characteristics that a manager and a leader should possess, so that they are successful at what they do. One of the most important things that a leader should do at all times is to lead their employees by example, and this is going to cover many different things.
A manager cannot expect certain qualities and levels of performance out of their staff if they are not demonstrating them. The manager must always be on time for work, and work as hard as they can while they are there. Being tardy or slacking off during the shift will result in the manager losing respect from those under his supervision, and others will follow in the managers footsteps. To be a good manager and a good leader you need to work harder then you want your staff to work, and lead by example every day that you work.
To be a good manager and a good leader all personal issues and preferences need to put aside. A manager cannot have favorite employees, or discriminate in any way. Everyone needs to be treated equally, and they need to be treated with the upmost respect. Any leaders, who want to be respected, need to respect the people that they are leading. Having a positive attitude and being courteous to your staff will rub off on them, and they will have a more positive attitude, and return the respect. Attitudes are contagious and you want to make sure that as a leader yours is always worth catching.
Think about all of the times that you have worked under someone, and what has really bothered you about other people leadership skills. Whatever things have bothered you in the past you should be sure not to do. You know how you wanted to be treated when you were working by your manager, so be sure that you treat your staff the same way. The better you treat them, the more they are going to like you and they are going to want to work hard for you and with you. Take your personal experiences that you have had, and apply them into your new position.
A large part of learning how to be a good manager and a good leader is by knowing the all of the different company policies well. You always want to be sure that everything you are doing is being done correctly, and everything you’re teaching your staff is correct. Whenever you doubt or question anything go to the next person above you instead of guessing, or making a mistake. If you never do anything against the company policies, you lead your team by positive influence and example, and you work as hard as you can every day, you are going to be a good leader and manager.
