As a job seeker your first goal is to get the interview. After the job interview has been scheduled and accomplished you will want to be careful how you proceed. You do not want to simply walk out of an interview and forget about it.

Taking the time to digest how you perceive the interview is first and foremost. You want to get an idea of how you think you did in order to address any issues you feel you might have had going forward.

Contemplation will help you gauge your success and better understand the interviewing process. This having been said, it is also important to keep in mind that each interview will be different.

After the job interview has been successfully completed it is important to let your prospective employer know that you were present and engaged during that interview. While you do not want to pick the phone up and start calling the prospective employer every day to see if you have the job, you do want to make contact again to keep you name at the top of their though process.

How to Follow-Up After a Job Interview

The goal is to show your interest and keep in touch without appearing to be desperate or needy. This can best be done by composing a thank you letter and sending it to the prospective employer after the interview. This is of course something you want to get to them as soon as possible, therefore if you are able to do so by email or facsimile that would be beneficial.

When composing the thank you letter remember to use some details so that they do not feel as though you have turned out a generic letter that you will be producing for all your interviewers. After the job interview take some time to make quick notes while the interview is fresh in your mind.

You might even consider doing this in the interview. This will show that you are paying attention and interested in the position. It also gives the impression that while you are interested in the position you will be weighing your options as well.

Using those notes to pull out some specific information without sounding as though you are overworking the thank you letter will go a long way to make a connection.

If you have not heard any news several days after the job interview, contacting the prospective employer is not unacceptable. It is a good idea to make sure that you are fresh in the minds of the interviewer and simply leaving a message for them, but not interrupting them will put your name on their mind without seemingly hounding them.

This will go a long way to showing your professionalism. Follow-up after an interview is the one place where people often get misguided. If you can take the time to practice professionalism and ensure that you don’t make yourself look too desperate, you can often create a great professional impression and show that you are serious about your interest in the position.
